Carton Competition 15-Year Retrospective: Part 3

5/8/2015

With the final installment of our North American Paperboard Packaging Competition retrospective below, these five cartons represent the most recent winners of the Paperboard Package of the Year award—a top honor in the folding carton industry. We commend these and the other cartons we highlighted in parts 1 and 2

2010
Norman Lear DVD Collection
Bert-Co Industries, Inc.

This package generates exceptional consumer value and minimizes the interior space needed to house multiple discs—all without the use of plastic trays. The length of the package makes it stand out on the retail shelf and since it is a collector’s item, it’s more likely to be kept and reused.

2011
Cheerios Bring On the Gold
Graphic Packaging International

A limited edition cereal box that is designed to leverage General Mills’ promotion of the 2010 Winter Olympics, this carton features a 3D interactive hockey game on its back panel. Requiring only minimal modifications to the existing retail carton, the game insert was attached to the outer box inline and in tight registration, via a single pass through a high-speed, straight-line gluer.

2012
Capri Sun I-Beam Carton
Graphic Packaging International

The new vendor-style design allows consumers to place the carton horizontally in their fridge so they can remove pouches as needed. It also features I-Beams—extensions of the carton’s end flaps that are folded in toward the carton—which provide rigidity, strength, stability, and increased top-load compression strength. 20% lighter than its predecessors, this carton uses approx. 35,000,000 less pounds of fiber annually than the previous design.

2013
Motorola Razr Maxx Launch Kit
JohnsByrne, Co.

Created for Verizon’s launch of a new Motorola phone, this space-age package transforms from shipping vessel to a launch kit, and even to a countertop display. It consists of a two-part SBS hinged box with a magnetic closure that, when opened, elevates the central phone carrier unit. Soft touch and gloss UV coatings distinguish the outer structure from the inner glossy red phone carrier unit.

2014
Hybrid Egg Carton Lid

Cascades Boxboard Group

A new take on a traditional 12-pack egg carton, this striking and functional SBS lid replaces the standard molded pulp lid. While the base still provides the proven protection of molded pulp, the new paperboard lid drastically expands the possibilities for branding, with 45% more graphic space than traditional molded pulp or plastic egg carton lids.
