By Bob Neff, T&P Chair, Neff Packaging Solutions
Part of PPC’s mission is to help members learn about the nuts and bolts of folding carton converting, and the Technical and Production Committee (T&P) spearheads those initiatives. I recently became the Chair of the T&P committee, so I want to share a bit about what we do and where we’re going.
Our charter is simple: T&P creates educational programming and shares actionable information on the latest issues in paperboard packaging production. T&P forums and events help members solve problems and collectively share tips about the nitty gritty details of manufacturing that are so crucial to all of our businesses.
The T&P Committee has been active for many years, and most recently we’ve held programming on reducing paperboard waste, overall equipment effectiveness, automation, and mobile reporting technologies. You might also recall our work on short run solutions for paperboard packaging. Between 2014 and 2016, the committee put on two workshops about emerging short run technology and also created two editions of a 60-page primer to short run converting. I’ve included a video of the 2014 session in this post.
As the committee’s new Chair, I’m in the process of organizing our future goals and initiatives. We’re considering a number of topics and platforms that will continue to provide actionable value to independents as well as get the integrated folks involved. We’re also considering logistics: should we host stand-alone events or include T&P programming as part of PPC’s biannual conferences? Additionally, is there value in teaming up with other groups like the Financial Executives and Human Resources Committee?
We’re still in the brainstorming phase for 2018 content, so please feel free to reach out with suggestions. (You can contact Brian Westerlind, the T&P staff liaison.) Remember, T&P’s output is only as good as the energy and resources we put in, so get involved. That way, we can maximize the value for all—and at the end of the day, we can all make better boxes.
