Forest Certifications

Although PPC does not endorse any specific forestry management program, the certification labels below confirm that the paper or paperboard used in the manufacture of product packaging has been harvested from managed, certified sustainable forests.

:logo_PEFC.gifProgramme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification.  PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests … with mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world's forest area.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is a fully independent, charitable organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management. The SFI 2005-2009 Standard promotes sustainable forest management through nine principles, 13 objectives, 34 performance measures and 102 indicators developed by professional foresters, conservationists, scientists and others. The standard addresses key environmental, social and economic forest values – from water quality and biodiversity to harvesting and regeneration.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. FSC applies its standards to more than 222 million acres of forests in over 82 countries.

Canadian Standards Association (CSA) works with a diverse range of stakeholders interested in sustainable forest management to develop Canada's National Standard for Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) CAN/CSA-Z809.

The Lacey Act
A conservation law enacted in 1900 to protect plants and wildlife from being trafficked illegally, The Lacey Act was expanded in 2008 to make it unlawful to import certain plant products without an import declaration. For those importing paper and paperboard products made with recycled materials, the declaration must also contain the product’s approximate percentage of recycled content.
