In honor of Earth Day, Arbor Day, and as part of National Paperboard Packaging Week paper and packaging companies partner with schools from local communities throughout the U.S. and Canada in PPC's TICCIT program (pronounced “Ticket”), which stands for Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees."
This annual educational program for elementary school students highlights the natural renewability and sustainability of paperboard packaging as well as the benefits of recycling. It demonstrates how paper is made and why trees are so important to the earth's sustainability lifecycle.
Each company also donates either tree seeds or native saplings to the school which children plant in a milk carton they have saved from lunch or brought from home. These "carton-and-tree units" are then planted in the ground. The cartons provide protection and a natural water funnel for the new trees. As the trees grow, the cartons biodegrade, completing the "trees into cartons, cartons into trees" cycle.
For more information on how your school or company can participate, click below for the 2011 TICCIT Program Guide. Check back soon for the 2012 edition.

Congratulations to the participating members and schools who planted over 8,400 trees last year!
